ความหมายของข้อมูลสถิติ
"ข้อมูลสถิติ" หมายถึง ข้อเท็จจริงหรือข่าวสารเกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวต่างๆ หรือลายละเอียดของสิ่งของต่างๆ ที่สนใจศึกษา ซึ่งอาจจะเป็นข้อความหรือตัวเลขก็ได้

2. ข้อมูลที่เป็นตัวเลข หรือเรียกว่า ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณ เป็นข้อมูลที่ใช้แทนขนาดหรือปริมาณ ซึ่งวัดออกมาได้เป็นค่าตัวเลขโดยตรง เช่น ความสูง 160 เซนติเมตร น้ำหนักของสมคิด 50 กิโลกรัม น้ำหนักผักชี 9 ขีด ราคาแชมพู 50 บาท เป็นต้น
ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณที่ไม่ต่อเนื่อง คือข้อมูลที่ได้จากการนับ ดังนั้น ค่าที่ได้จึงเป็นตัวเลขจำนวนเต็ม และมีค่าที่แน่นอนเท่านั้น เช่นจำนวนพนักงานในแผนก IT มี 50 คนเป็นต้น

แหล่งที่มาของข้อมูล แบ่งได้ 2 ประเภทได้แก่
1. แหล่งปฐมภูมิ เป็นแหล่งข้อมูลโดยตรง เช่น ข้อมูลที่ได้จากการสัมภาษณ์ การสังเกต การกรอกแบบสอบถาม เป็นต้น ซึ้งผู้วิจัยรวบรวมขึ้นเองหรือเป็นข้อมูลใหม่ ที่ไม่มีการเก็บรวบรวมมาก่อน
2. แหล่งข้อมูลทุติยภูมิ เป็นแหล่งข้อมูลที่มีผู้เก็บข้อมูลไว้แล้ว เช่น ข้อมูลจากทะเบียน หนังสือ หนังสือพิมพ์ วารสาร จุลสาร กระทรวงต่างๆ สถาานฑูต ธนาคาร ห้องสมุด เว็บไซต์ เป็นต้น ซึ่งผู้วิจัยสามารถนำข้อมูลที่มีอยู่แล้วไปใช้งานต่อ
